Why Does "Local" Actually Matter for Playground Projects?

Quick Answer: When something goes wrong with a playground—and sometimes things do—you want someone who'll actually show up. We're based in Midland Park, about 35-45 minutes from most Hudson County towns. That's accountability you can't get from an out-of-state company.

You can buy playground equipment from companies all over the country. Most of them will happily ship to Hudson County. So why does it matter that we're right next door?

I Can't Hide From You

Our showroom is in Midland Park, Bergen County — about 35 minutes from Hoboken. Chances are your kids have been to a birthday party at our store. I go to the same parks and restaurants you do. If I mess up your project, I'm going to hear about it. There's a real chance the kiddos playing on your playground know my family!

I Know Hudson County

Hudson County truly has a place in my heart. I lived in both Hoboken and Jersey City throughout my 20s and 30s — worked at Exchange Place for years back in my tech and finance days. I actually ran into this girl at the Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden after not seeing her for over 10 years. That girl became my wife, Erika. We got married at Maritime Parc in Liberty State Park.

We lived in West New York and Hoboken together for years after that. Some of our favorite memories are walking around Hoboken with our oldest daughter Carly, stopping at coffee shops and visiting the waterfront parks.

I've worked with organizations throughout Hudson County for years. I know the area, I know the procurement quirks, and I know which towns are easier to work with and which ones require extra patience.

Response Time Matters

Hoboken and Jersey City are about 35-45 minutes from our Midland Park office — but bear with me if you ask me to come to Jersey City after 4pm. If I have to hop on 1&9, that 35 minutes might turn into a few hours!

Can Hudson County Organizations Use Cooperative Purchasing?

Quick Answer: Yes. We're approved vendors in the Bergen County Cooperative Purchasing Program, which is available to Hudson County municipalities and public entities. We are also a vendor in the Hudson County Purchasing Portal!

If you work for a Hudson County municipality, school district, or public entity, you already know the RFP process. Writing the spec, advertising for bids, evaluating proposals, waiting months while nothing happens. And you'd prefer not to deal with that.

NJ Swingsets & Playgrounds is approved through the Bergen County Co-Op program, which is available to organizations outside Bergen County. The competitive bidding has already been done. The pricing is already negotiated. You just buy through the existing contract. It's compliant, it's legal, and it can cut months off your timeline. You can also list your job through the Hudson County Purchasing Portal. We are an approved vendor here as well.

Not sure if your organization qualifies? Just shoot me a call or email — I can usually tell you in about five minutes.

What Types of Organizations Do We Serve in Hudson County?

Quick Answer: Schools, parks, churches, daycares, HOAs, and community organizations throughout all 12 Hudson County municipalities.

Hudson County is one of the most densely populated counties in the country — you've got Jersey City and Hoboken with massive development, Bayonne and North Bergen with growing communities, and everything from Weehawken to Secaucus in between. Each has different needs, different budgets, different timelines.

That's why I don't just send you a catalog and a price list. I actually want to understand your situation before putting together a proposal.

How Much Does Commercial Playground Equipment Cost in Hudson County?

Quick Answer: $15,000 for small sites to $500,000+ for large municipal parks. Most school and mid-size park projects fall between $50,000-$200,000 including equipment and installation.

Playground costs are pretty consistent across New Jersey — the equipment comes from the same manufacturers and labor is regional. What really varies is site preparation and surfacing, which depend on your specific property conditions. And the number everyone forgets: installation typically costs 35-50% of equipment cost. So that $50,000 playground? Budget at least another $17,500-$25,000 for installation.

What Can Go Wrong With the DIY Playground Approach?

Quick Answer: As a full-service dealer, we handle everything—planning, design, equipment selection, installation, surfacing, and final inspection. One point of contact, one point of accountability. The DIY approach of buying cheap equipment online and hiring random contractors leads to failed inspections, safety hazards, and projects that cost twice as much to fix.

I've seen this story play out too many times. An organization's fundraising falls short, budgets get tight, and someone decides to "save money" by becoming their own project manager. They buy the cheapest equipment online and assume they'll figure out the rest.

The Contractor Nightmare

After the equipment arrives, they scramble to find someone to install it. Rather than a playground specialist, they hire a general contractor. Then:

  • Contractors back out – They agree to the job, then disappear when they realize what's involved
  • They underestimate the work – Without playground experience, they quote too low, then demand more money halfway through
  • They abandon the job – When you won't pay extra, they walk off, leaving a half-installed playground
  • No knowledge of codes – General contractors don't know ASTM F1487 standards. They don't know fall height requirements. They don't know proper surfacing depths.

The Safety Catastrophe

Improper installation isn't just an inconvenience—it's dangerous:

  • Children get hurt – Equipment installed incorrectly creates pinch points, entrapment hazards, and fall risks
  • Failed insurance inspections – Your playground gets shut down until it's fixed
  • Complete reinstallation required – Often you can't just "fix" improper installation. You have to tear it out and start over
  • Surfacing disasters – If the wrong amount of surfacing is installed, it can mean the playground fails inspection and puts children's lives at risk
THE REAL COST: I've seen organizations spend $50,000 on a DIY approach, then spend another $40,000 to have it torn out and done correctly. The "savings" cost them nearly double.

  • Ongoing support – Questions six months from now? Call me. I'm still picking up the phone.

What Modern, Inclusive, and Natural Playground Options Are Available?

Quick Answer: We carry modern, inclusive, and natural playground equipment — from LED-lit structures and fully accessible play systems to robinia wood designs that go beyond the standard metal-and-plastic setup.

Commercial playgrounds have come a long way from basic slides and swings. Here are some of the features that set our equipment apart.

LED-Lit Playgrounds

This is one of my favorite installations to show people. The community wanted a playground that didn't shut down when the sun went down — somewhere families could gather in the evening and the kiddos could still play safely. The LED lighting is built right into the equipment — the panels, the leaf details, even the slides light up. It's not floodlights bolted on as an afterthought. The whole thing feels warm and welcoming after dark without being overwhelming. This is the kind of project that turns a playground into a destination.

Robinia Wood Playgrounds

This project was built as a centerpiece for a community that wanted something meaningful — not just another metal-and-plastic play structure. The entire playground is robinia wood, which is naturally durable, looks incredible, and holds up in outdoor conditions for decades. The main structure has tall towers, enclosed slides, rope bridges, climbing nets, and elevated paths that challenge kids of all ages. When you see it in person, it doesn't feel like a "playground" — it feels like something the kiddos want to explore. That's the difference with robinia.

Fully Accessible Playgrounds

Psagot Play Balloons fully accessible playground system - GOOD DESIGN 2022 award winner with wheelchair-accessible bridges
Psagot Play "Balloons" — GOOD DESIGN 2022 Award Winner

This is one of the reasons we chose Psagot Play as a manufacturer. Their "Balloons" play system won the GOOD DESIGN 2022 international design award — and it's not hard to see why. The whole structure was designed from the ground up so that kids in wheelchairs can access the upper levels and actually play with their friends, not just watch from the ground. Wheelchair-accessible bridges connect to higher floors, and there are sensory panels, musical elements, rope nets, and slides for every age and ability. It's fully inclusive without feeling like a medical device — it's colorful, fun, and the kids don't even realize it's accessible. They're just playing. That's how it should be.
