The Psagot Playgrounds Monophone is a pentatonic outdoor instrument that uses a curated set of notes from the major scale, starting on sol instead of do. That note selection produces scales with a distinct Far Eastern character. Because it's pentatonic, any combination of notes a child plays will sound good together, so there's zero frustration and a lot of discovery. Fits 2 kids at once, ages 2-12.

I like the thinking behind the Monophone. Instead of giving kids a full chromatic scale and hoping for the best, Psagot selected a handful of notes from the major scale and started the sequence on sol rather than do. The result is a pentatonic layout that naturally produces patterns reminiscent of Far Eastern musical traditions, so children get an immediate connection to a whole different sound world without any formal instruction.
