The Rhythm Group of Three is one of the more interesting musical setups I have seen for playgrounds because it mixes melodic and percussive instruments in one station. The metallophone and glockenspiel give kids pitched notes to work with, while the bongos add rhythm. Put three kids in front of these, and they start figuring out how to play together on their own -- that cooperative element is something you do not get from a single instrument.
Each instrument is built to take years of outdoor weather and heavy kid use. There are no detachable mallets or sticks to walk off with, which is a practical detail that matters for any public installation. We usually set these up as a music garden anchor or alongside other musical pieces like tongue drums and chimes. The full 2-12 age range means toddlers and older kids can all find something to play with.
