Interlocking rubber playground tiles that connect into a firm, level safety surface. They come in three thicknesses, and each one is third-party impact-tested to ASTM F1292 at a set fall height.
Routine care is light. Blow leaves off, rinse every so often, and if one tile gets damaged you replace that one tile without tearing up the whole surface. They aren't maintenance-free, though. I am seeing more tiles pull apart and warp in areas with heavy sun over longer periods of time.
Two things decide it: the fall height of your tallest piece of equipment, and what the tiles sit on. These are the fall heights I go by for each thickness, taken from its lab tests:

Same tile, different base, different rating. Laid straight onto concrete, every thickness loses some of its rating. Those are the only two bases they've been tested on. On asphalt, dirt or anything else, call me first. Same goes if you're not sure of your fall height.
