The Psagot Playgrounds Marimba is the most musically capable outdoor instrument I carry. Fifteen notes across two octaves means kids can play actual songs, not just bang on things and hope for the best. Each note sits over its own resonator box, which amplifies the tone and gives it the warm, rounded sound you associate with indoor marimbas. The tuning is diatonic, so even random hitting produces harmonies that sound intentional.
That tuning approach is smart because it means a 2-year-old slapping the bars gets a pleasant result, while a 12-year-old with some musical knowledge can pick out melodies and experiment with rhythm patterns. The recycled HDPE frame holds up outdoors without degrading, and the instrument maintains its tuning through weather exposure. Two kids can play at once, which opens up call-and-response and collaborative composition.
