The Playground Equipment Log Roll is a balance and coordination station for children ages 5-12. Kids stand on a rotating cylindrical log and walk or jog in place while gripping an overhead steel bar for support. It creates a running-like motion that also demands balance and core control. Holds 1 kid at a time, with an 18" fall height and use zone of 13' 1" x 16' 11". Meets ASTM F1487 and CPSC #325 safety standards.
BEST FOR: I'd recommend the Log Roll for fitness circuits that need a balance and coordination station. It is a different kind of challenge than climbing or pulling -- kids have to keep their feet moving while staying centered on the log. The low 18" fall height and compact footprint make it easy to add to any playground.
The Log Roll is one of those pieces that kids do not expect. They step on, the log starts to rotate under their feet, and suddenly they are working on balance and coordination without realizing it. The overhead steel bar gives them something to hold onto while they find their footing, which makes it accessible even to kids who are still developing their balance skills. The motion mimics running but adds a stability component that flat ground does not provide.
With an 18" fall height, surfacing requirements are minimal -- this is about as low-risk as commercial fitness equipment gets. The compact 13' x 17' use zone means it fits into tight spots. Powder-coated steel frame holds up to weather and heavy use. I like adding this to fitness circuits as a change of pace between climbing and strength stations.
